Why the #2050Challenge Matters
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, demanding urgent global action. The Royal Society recognized the need to inspire hope and promote solutions grounded in science. With the UK’s 2050 net zero target looming, the challenge was to engage a global audience, simplify complex scientific ideas, and emphasize actionable solutions. This project provided a platform for diverse voices to share insights, sparking meaningful conversations and empowering individuals to support climate action.
Before suggesting the #2050Challenge concept, we conducted thorough research into the topic and what might resonate in a crowded online market. We identified the need for concise, impactful messaging to cut through the noise. Our concept was to link 2050 to the amount of seconds in the post.. 20 seconds to define the problem, 50 to outline the solution. This format delivered clarity, urgency, and accessibility, making complex scientific ideas relatable and engaging for a global audience.
LIQUONA recorded the first 10 #2050Challenge videos, featuring leading scientists delivering concise, impactful messages. But the real power of the campaign lay in empowering others to participate. We created a comprehensive “kit of parts,” enabling users to take the challenge themselves. This toolkit included guidance, branded templates, and tips for recording, ensuring consistency and quality. By equipping participants globally, we expanded the campaign’s reach, fostering a collaborative movement for climate action and shared solutions.
We launched the #2050Challenge with precision, leveraging Twitter to drive engagement and amplify the campaign’s reach. The response was phenomenal, with contributions from institutions, scientists, and even Stephen Fry! With over 5.1M impressions and 905k web searches, we reported back on the campaign’s success, showcasing its powerful global impact.
